Researchers from around the USA gathered at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, Washington October 6-7 for a conference on "Energy Balance, Cancer Prognosis, and Survivorship". One of the primary goals of the transdisciplinary conference, sponsored by The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Transdisciplinary Research on Energetics and Cancer (TREC), was to examine the relationships between energy balance and cancer prognosis and survivorship.
Back in the Swing funds research in energy balance work at the Breast Cancer Survivorship Center at KU Cancer Center. Their research, and the other research presented at the conference highlights the importance of Energy Balance- the proper combination of exercise and nutrition- in lowering breast cancer occurrence and reoccurrence, as well improving outcomes during treatment.
The first Back in the Swing Research Award was presented to Catherine Duggan, Ph.D., from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center for the Best Poster in Energy Balance in Breast Cancer Survivorship. The program committee judged Dr. Dugan's Award as the best among 10 abstracts that focused on breast cancer.
