Kansas City Back in the Swing Breast Cancer Survivorship Services

Back in the Swing has funded the following programs and centers in the Greater Kansas City regional area (Kansas City, Missouri and surrounding areas in Kansas and Missouri) to help you prevent a cancer recurrence, prevent the development of a new cancer and minimize any late-onset effects from breast cancer-related treatments.     The only comprehensive, academic medical center-based specializing in breast cancer survivorship center in the country, this Center sees breast cancer survivors from across the region and the country. Launched with a grant from Back in the Swing in 2007, services include genetic testing, fertility preservation, energy balance and cardiology. The Center is also conducting research on all clinical care, which will begin to re-define the standard of care for every person after breast cancer.

    Since 2007, North Kansas City Hospital has offered an innovative "Now What!?" Survivorship Center the only cancer- rehabilitation facility in Kansas City. Each patient is comprehensively assessed for needs in the areas of: practical, family/emotional, spiritual/religious, nutrition, physical and mobility problems.

    This new program is a 12-week holistic wellness rehabilitation experience for breast cancer survivors who have finished acute treatment. It is designed to help women regain their physical, emotional psychological, intellectual, and spiritual strength, creating a "new normal" and balance in their lives. IT was developed by a PH.D. nurse, breast cancer survivor and psychologist who offers training and materials to hospitals and other institutions. The goals are to improve physical status, decrease emotional distress increase hope and resilience and prevent post-traumatic stress reactions. Education empowers choice, choice promotes a sense of control, and group support normalizes the experience, practice builds self-efficacy and appropriate support helps people transcend trauma. Presentations include nutrition, spirituality, exercise, healing, relaxation, body image, relationships, and ways to advocate for oneself. as well as coping skills. It will be initially offered free of charge twice a year, and is open to everyone in the community.
  • Breast Cancer Survivorship Navigator Program

    The first site in the country to extend the Patient Navigator program already established at Truman, this program proved to be so successful in the past year that Back in the Swing has funded the addition of a social worker to the team, due to increased demand for meeting the needs of breast cancer survivors through developing a personalized and comprehensive Back in the Swing Survivorship Plan.
  • Nutritional Therapy for Cancer Survivors

    A nutritionist meets with survivors for assessment and screening to determine the best course of nutritional therapy to prevent or reverse deficiencies, maintain strength and energy, protect immune function, aid in recovery and maximize quality of life.

    Cancer Action's Back in the Swing Survivorship Coordinator oversees several free programs that have increased enrollment every year since they began, thanks to Back in the Swing's partnership that began in 2003. Women have taken getting back in the swing to heart annually through retreats, classes and personal growth sessions designed to provide professional guidance and social and emotional support along the breast cancer survivorship journey.
